Ice Storm Contributes to Ice Dam Damage in New Baltimore Home?

3/12/2024 (Permalink)

Icicles hang from a railing. We restore damage caused by ice dams in Macomb County.

Our Mount Clemens and New Baltimore team is a trusted leader in ice dam damage restoration services. An ice storm can significantly contribute to ice dam damage due to the combination of freezing rain and plummeting temperatures. When an ice storm hits, freezing rain coats surfaces, including rooftops, with a layer of ice. This ice buildup creates a foundation for the formation of ice dams.

Ice dams occur when the heat escaping from a building's interior causes the snow on the roof to melt. The melted snow runs down the roof until it reaches the eaves, where it encounters the ice accumulated during the ice storm. The colder eaves freeze the melted water, trapping it behind the ice dam.

As more snow melts from the warm interior, the trapped water behind the ice dam accumulates. This can lead to significant water back up under the shingles, potentially infiltrating the roof structure, attic, and even the interior of the building. This water intrusion can result in structural damage, compromised insulation, and even interior water damage, including ceiling leaks and damaged walls.

Localized Flooding Causes Water Damage in New Baltimore Home?

2/13/2024 (Permalink)

Snow from a storm is melting and refreezing on a roof. We respond to storm damage emergencies 24 hours a day in Macomb County.

Our Mount Clemens and New Baltimore teams have been restoring storm damage in New Baltimore for many years. Flooding during a thaw following a winter storm can cause significant property damage due to a combination of factors. As temperatures rise and snow and ice begin to melt, several mechanisms come into play that can lead to this damage.

The sudden influx of melting snow and ice can overwhelm drainage systems and waterways, causing localized or widespread flooding. Accumulated snow and ice contain large volumes of water, and when they melt rapidly, the ground may still be frozen or saturated from previous precipitation, making it unable to absorb the excess water. This can result in surface flooding that inundates properties, basements, and low-lying areas, causing water damage to homes, possessions, and infrastructure.

Additionally, thawing can reveal hidden ice dams on roofs, leading to water leaks and damage to ceilings, walls, and insulation. As snow and ice melt on the roof, the water can flow down and refreeze at the eaves, forming ice dams that block proper drainage and force water under roofing materials, potentially causing interior water damage.

Mount Clemens Community Builds Resiliency for Disaster Response?

9/13/2023 (Permalink)

Emergency supplies sit on a table. We are leaders in storm damage restoration services in Macomb County.

Our local Mount Clemens and New Baltimore team want everyone to be prepared for a disaster. During National Preparedness Month, the Mount Clemens community can proactively build resilience for disaster response through a multifaceted approach that involves education, collaboration, and community engagement.

During the month of September, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) focuses on encouraging individuals, families, businesses, and communities to take proactive steps to enhance their preparedness. Workshops, seminars, and webinars on disaster preparedness and response are planned and these sessions can cover topics like creating emergency kits, developing family communication plans, and understanding local hazards.

Community engagement is critical to building community engagement. This year’s focus is on reaching elderly vulnerable populations during and after a disaster strikes. According to the American Red Cross, some factors that make older adults more vulnerable after disasters may include:

  • A greater likelihood of suffering from chronic conditions and the need for associated medications
  • A greater reliance on assistive devices such as walkers or glasses, as well as support from caregivers and others
  •  An increased likelihood of social isolation

By emphasizing education, collaboration, and community engagement, our local community can enhance its disaster response resilience, ensuring that its residents are better prepared to face and recover from disasters, big or small.

Stormwater Floods Basement in Harrison Charter Township Home?

6/27/2023 (Permalink)

A basement wall shows cracks and signs of water damage. We are leaders in storm damage restoration services in Macomb County.

During the summer months, storms can blow in and cause damage to homes and buildings in Harrison Charter Township. Our local Mount Clemens and New Baltimore teams are on call 24 hours a day, 365 days a year to respond to property damage emergencies. Here are some tips from the Insurance Information Institute for preventing basement stormwater seepage:

  • Reseal your basement. Water in the basement is often caused by cracks in building foundations or floor slabs. If you notice water seepage after heavy rain when you’ve never had a problem, it may mean that your once-waterproof cement floors and basement walls have deteriorated. Painting vulnerable areas with water sealant can prevent seepage.
  • Make sure water drains away from the building. Seepage is exacerbated by soil that has settled in a way to make water flow toward the building. After a storm, and especially if the ground is already saturated, rainwater that flows towards the building goes down the outside of the foundation wall, potentially through any cracks.
  • Install a backwater valve. Though less common than other causes of basement water, sewer backups are messy. Learn more about your sewer responsibilities and install and maintain a backwater valve, which allows sewage to go out, but not come back in.

New Baltimore residents are no strangers to severe storms or storm damage. Our Mount Clemens and New Baltimore team have been restoring storm damage for Macomb County residents and businesses for many years. Here are some lightning safety tips from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration:

  • Avoid isolated tall trees, hilltops, utility poles, cell phone towers, cranes, large equipment, ladders, scaffolding, or rooftops
  • Avoid open areas, such as fields
  • Never lie flat on the ground
  • Retreat to dense areas of smaller trees that are surrounded by larger trees, or retreat to low-lying areas but watch for flooding
  • Avoid water, and immediately get out of and away from bodies of water
  • Avoid wiring, plumbing, and fencing. Stay away from all metal objects, equipment, and surfaces that can conduct electricity.
  • Do not shelter in sheds, pavilions, tents, or covered porches as they do not provide adequate protection from lightning
  • Seek fully enclosed, substantial buildings with wiring and plumbing. In modern buildings, the interiorwiring and plumbing will act as an earth ground.
  • A building is a safe shelter as long as you are not in contact with anything that can conduct electricity (e.g., electrical equipment or cords, plumbing fixtures, corded phones). Do not lean against concrete walls or floors (which may have metal bars inside).

  • Make sure water drains away from the building.Water is invasive and will find its way into a structure easily when water is allowed to pool around the foundation. After a storm, or when the ground is already saturated by rainwater, the water may enter into the foundation wall through any cracks.

A yellow, diamond-shaped sign stating, “Deep Freeze Warning” is show against a snowing backdrop, We respond to storm damage emergencies in the Mount Clemens area 24 hours a day.

Frozen pipes, oh my!

One winter, I went with my friend to do a winter inspection of her family’s vacation home. We discovered a burst pipe had caused significant damage to the plumbing and flooded the house. It was costly to repair, and she made sure to take protective measures to avoid a situation like this from happening in the future. SERVPRO® of Mount Clemens, New Baltimore restores storm damage of all kinds, and has been helping residents in the Mount Clemens area for years, 24 hours a day.

Here are some tips from the  American Red Cross on what to do to protect pipes from freezing:

  • Drain water from the swimming pool and water sprinkler supply lines.
  • Remove, drain, and store hoses used outdoors. Close inside valves supplying outdoor hose bibs. Open the outside hose bibs to allow water to drain. Keep the outside valve open so the water remaining in the pipe can expand without causing a pipe to break.
  • Add insulation to attics, basements, and crawl spaces.
  • Check around the home for other areas water supply lines are located in unheated areas. Insulate hot and cold water pipes in these areas.
  • Insulate exposed pipes.
  • Consider relocating exposed pipes to provide increased protection from freezing.

A few ways to prepare for a storm with strong winds are:

  •     Secure loose items
  •     Have an emergency kit ready including non-perishable foods and water

Your local meteorologists will monitor the weather conditions in your area keeping you informed on what type of storm is happening. Tips for Staying Safe During a Storm

10/5/2020 (Permalink)

Broken window and SERVPRO logo Stay away from windows during a lightning storm in Macomb County

Common safety rules and precautions state that the public should generally try to stay inside of a safe area or building when a lightning storm or thunderstorm occurs. There are many commercial buildings in the Naples area. SERVPRO® of Mount Clemens, New Baltimore wants to share the following safety tips for staying safe during a thunderstorm while inside a commercial building:

  • Stay away from all windows or glass walls, especially during a lightning storm
  • Unplug appliances if possible
  • Pay attention to all alerts and warnings, as a thunderstorm can develop into a tornado if powerful enough
  • Avoid running water if possible since electricity can travel through plumbing

Weather is unpredictable. Although the weather can be predicted, it can also change in an instant without much warning. If a thunderstorm does happen to turn into tornado weather in Macomb County, consider the following tips:

  • If the commercial building has a basement or storm cellar, head there immediately
  • Use your arms to protect your head and neck in the event of flying debris or shattered windows
  • Do not leave the safe area until the local alerting system says it is safe to do so

Remember, SERVPRO of Mount Clemens, New Baltimore is here to help. Our trained team members will show up ready to go and can assist in cleanup and restoration after a thunderstorm, lightning storm and even a tornado.

As an international standard-setting organization, the IICRC is in the vanguard of water damage restoration strategies, including hands-on use of the innovative equipment that efficiently manages unwanted water. Our certified employees can share with you the scientifically-based reasons for and implementation of restoration best practices.

How Do Restoration Professionals Establish a Workspace that Limits Hazards?

When we arrive, an experienced project manager completes a safety assessment. This step identifies issues that could cause injury or worse for our customers or workers. We put in place controls that shield individuals from harm during restoration, essential for the  health and well-being of you and your loved ones and our employees:

Electrical hazards

  • We wrap up and confine cords and lines that could tangle and spark
  • We turn off electricity in areas we cannot control until the water evacuates to avoid shock or electrocution

Structural hazards

  • We identify supporting structures weakened or broken because of water pressure or saturation -- adding braces to mitigate further risks or taping off the affected sections of your home.
  • We check for water collected in cavities, especially overheard or in walls, threatening collapse -- using controlled demolition techniques like punching weep holes in ceilings or making flood cuts in walls to release water and facilitate drying efforts.

Contamination issues

We categorize the water depending on what dirt, chemicals, or infectious waste mixed into the fluids -- determining what types of personal protective equipment (PPE) our crews need to wear, whether we need to construct containment work areas to limit spread, and if the extracted water will require containment and disposal as hazardous waste.

What Data Do Restoration Professionals Gather to Plan and Monitor Progress?

Project managers walk through your home, observing the damage they can see and planning strategies to discover whether and where water migrated into unseen spaces. Baseline moisture level data is vital for determining and monitoring the progress toward drying goals.

  • Job scoping to determine the extent of the water damage:
  • Visual inspection
  • Testing with moisture detectors, moisture meters, and infrared imaging for hidden and trapped water -- moisture levels of similar materials are recorded for comparison purposes.

When the Job Plan Is Complete, What Can I Expect the Restoration Technicians to Do?

We review the restoration game plan with you and make sure your insurance company is also in the loop. The signature green service vehicles open their doors, and the equipment rolls off for action.

Emergency services

  • Water pumping and extraction -- submersible pumps take care of water deeper than two inches while truck-mounted and portable extractors suction up the remaining fluids.
  • Controlled demolition to release trapped water -- data gathered earlier pinpoints places the water collected in cavities, and we cut or drill holes or remove sections of building materials to gain access to the water.
  • Cleaning and disinfection -- surfaces receive a thorough cleaning and then broadcast disinfection with EPA-registered products.
  • Structural drying -- the moisture levels graphed earlier inform our Applied Structural Drying (ASD) technicians in positioning air movers, heaters, and dehumidifiers to facilitate evaporation and remove the water vapor produced for appropriate disposal.

You need an ally when water damages your home. SERVPRO of Mount Clemens, New Baltimore is there every step of the way, providing exemplary restoration services while answering your questions and concerns. We answer your call to (586)598-5050, 24/7 because water does not wait.

Pet safety plans are just as detailed as human safety plans. SERVPRO® of Mount Clemens, New Baltimore wants to share the following pet evacuation tips with you:

  • Know which hotels accept pets and which ones do not – this is critical for your evacuation route planning

  • When practicing evacuation drills, include your pets so they have a sense of normality when the time comes
  • If your pets will be transferred in portable pet carriers, make sure they are comfortable being in one – practice helps with this
  • Grab a free rescue sticker from the ASPCA and mark how many animals you have inside the home as this allows rescue workers to know they should look for animals as well
